Why Diabetic Foot Ulcer (DFU) Prevention Matters

By Patti Bath, MBA, MSN, RN, NI-BC
Over 200 million people globally have diabetes-related foot disease. Despite its widespread prevalence, it remains one of the hardest chronic conditions to manage. Over time, high blood sugar levels can cause nerve damage, decreased blood flow, and impaired ability to heal. Together, that can cause a small blister or cut to turn into a debilitating wound. With a lifetime risk of developing a diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) as high as 34%, a recurrence rate of 65% and a 5-year mortality of 50-70%, proper foot care and offloading pressure are key to prevention¹.
The Role of Offloading
Our feet bear the weight of our bodies. When a DFU begins to form, the diabetes-related nerve damage prevents the pain signal from reaching the brain, blocking the warning sign that damage is occurring. The load our feet carry increases pressure on the ulcer, preventing it from healing. Offloading the weight from the damaged area has consistently proven to help wounds heal faster and prevent further infection and amputation¹.
DARCO Product Solutions
DARCO’s newest innovations in diabetic and wound care products are changing the status quo of bulky boots and uncomfortable walkers. Our team worked tirelessly to create a full line of products that look good while promoting healing. Two of the most popular products in the new line are the DUO™ Pro Wound Care Shoe and POGO® by DARCO athletic offloading sneaker.
The new DUO™ Pro Wound Care Shoe is designed with innovative, state-of-the-art materials. The Aircore™ Insole has a removable peg system that allows customizable pressure reduction where the wound needs it the most. The insole also rebounds with every step, keeping pressure away from the wound for longer. Two layers of EVA cushioning provide additional shock absorption, support, and stability. The specifically engineered cushioning comfortably supports the foot while reducing pressure up to 40% more than other wound care shoes.
The new POGO® by DARCO athletic offloading sneaker is designed for everyday prevention that looks as good as it feels. With the same Aircore™ Insole as the DUO™ Pro Wound Care Shoe, this stylish sneaker combines customizable pressure reduction with everyday versatility to keep feet healthy. The roomy toe box, bungee laces, and heel loop make it easy to pull them on and go.
Wherever you are in your foot health journey, DARCO International is here to help.
